Session 3 Media Sharing Tools and team leadership

Themed or Niche Social Networking

So what do I mean by Niche social networking? Niche social networking is where you share and network based on particular areas of interest such as films, music, reading and cooking. This way you get to share with like-minded people and people with similar interests to you. Most websites allow you to interact (which is what Web 2.0 is all about), even if it is as simple as being able to leave a comment and reply to comments.

Many of the Niche Social Networks allow you to join and log in with your Facebook login, which means that you don't have to remember lots of different login details and it also allows you to share information from these sites on Facebook.

Examples of Niche social networking sites that I use:

For the activities/discussion tasks, here are a few ideas that you might be able to share
  • The name of the site or application
  • What it claims to do
  • How to join

Media Sharing

This week we will take a look at the range of media sharing social media sites that are available.

Media Sharing sites are those that allow you to share videos, photos and audio with people over the Internet.



I have split these into 5 subcategories:

Photo sharing 

A photo sharing site is one that allows you to upload and store photos online, share photos with your "friends", or allow people to follow you on the site.

The original number 1 photo sharing site is Flickr.com. It has been around for a long time, and although the interface gets an upgrade, it essentially serves the same purpose that it did when it was created, except that it is now mostly professional photographers. It has been owned by SmugMug since April 2018. There has been some changes to the plans, so it will be interesting to see whether it can continue to survive.

AS well as the free version, you can update to Pro which gives you more features, but comes at a price.

Flickr also has the Commons, where you can spend time looking at photos that are in the public domain. There are a number of well known organisations that contribute to the commons.

The key goal of The Commons is to share hidden treasures from the world's public photography archives.

Video sharing


Sites that allow you to share video files - the first one that comes to everyone's mind would have to be YouTube.com.

Audio Sharing

By audio sharing sites I mean sites that allow to upload and share audio files, not just streaming from the Internet. These are sites that allow you to share audio files or music with those within your network. Soundcloud is a good example of this.

Audio Streaming

When you think of audio streaming nowadays, the one that comes to mind first is probably Spotify. Spotify is a music streaming site that allows you to listen to music, create and share playlists. You can join for free, but you can also pay for a premium subscription.

Multi-media

Mobile

Mobile specific media sharing apps. There are a range of mobile apps for smartphones that allow you to share media direct from your inbuilt camera. Some are mobile-specific and image or video-specific, others just allow you to link in with your preferred social networking site. Mobile social networking and file-sharing is a massive growth area, as more people are connected to the Internet with their smartphones and/or tablets.

Instagram is one that come mind instantly, but there are heaps more with new ones entering the sector all the time.

Instagram allows you to take a photo or video, apply a filter, then share on Instagram or your other Social Media tools

Instagram is also now available to view online or you can download an app to your computer from the Microsoft store.

Discussion: What mobile tools do you use to share Photos and/or video

Social Networks

As well as sites that are specifically for media sharing, most of the Social Networking sites also allow you to share Media files including photos and videos. These include Facebook, Twitter and Google+ just to name a few.

Copyright and Media Sharing


You will learn more about Copyright next term (if you haven't already completed the unit), so this is not a full lesson on Copyright in Australia. As we are talking about media sharing, such as images or videos, it is important to think about whether you have the legal right to share or not.

Today you will be put into your teams for your Assessment and will hold your first team meeting.

You will need to make a decision about which library scenario you prefer - I suggest having a first and second choice in case the other groups decide on the same one.

Your choice of library can be from the following list or one of your choice (please confirm with your teacher):

Social Bookmarking You all know how to Bookmark a website that you like - depending on your web browser it might be called bookmarking or favourites. With social Bookmarking, you can share these bookmarks with other people in your network as well as sort into categories and add tags to allow you to sort or search them based on different criteria. Some also allow you to bookmark and save the article for reading offline.
